Daily Health Check

For smooth and reliable operation, we recommend the System Manager inspect key indicators daily. This serves two goals. First, with daily inspection the System Manager gains familiarity with the normal state of the system and can more easily find abnormal messages and indications of abnormal performance. Second, any problems will be detected sooner rather than later.

HA Systems follow the same steps as non-HA systems for each PI Server in the collective. In addition, see the HA Daily Health Check (PI Collectives) below.

Daily Health Check - Use either local tools or remote tools to check the health of the server.

Area

What to check

Local Tools (server)

Remote Tools (client)

PI Server Subsystems In SMT, open Operation> PI Services. Are core PI subsystems and interfaces running? PI SMT 3 and Windows Task Manager PI SMT 3 or
Piverify (Unix and VMS)
Archives &
Backups
In SMT, open Operation> Archives. Are all archives loaded? Are there gaps between archives? Have PI System backups been run? When, and to which archive, will the next shift occur? PI SMT 3,
piartool -al,
view backup log located in: pi\backup
PI SMT 3
Message Log In SMT open Operation> Message Logs. Check the Server and SDK Logs to see whether unusual events have occurred. PI SMT 3 or pigetmsg.exe PI SMT 3
Connections In SMT 3, open Operation> PI Network Manager Statistics. How many open connections? Are stale connections accumulating? Are there network errors? PI SMT 3, ProcessBook, DataLink, or pilistupd.exe to see if pending events are waiting to be delivered. PI SMT 3, ProcessBook, or DataLink
Interfaces In SMT, choose Interfaces>PI Interface list and Points> PI Stale and Bad Points. Check ProcessBook trends of I/O rate tags. Check the PIPC.log (pimesslog on VMS and Unix) on interface nodes. PI SMT 3, ProcessBook, DataLink, Interface Status Utility (ISU), or Telnet PI SMT 3, ProcessBook, DataLink, or use the Interface Configuration Utility (ICU) from an API node.
Tag Data Does the archive data for a reference tag look normal? PI SMT 3 Data> Current Values/Recorded Values plug-ins, ProcessBook, DataLink, apisnap.bat or apisnap.sh (PI2) PI SMT 3 Data> Current Values/Recorded Values plug-ins, ProcessBook, or DataLink
Snapshot Data Flow Is the snapshot data flow normal? PI SMT 3 Operation> Snapshot and Archive Statistics plug-in, ProcessBook, DataLink, or piartool –ss PI SMT 3 Operation> Snapshot and Archive Statistics plug-in, ProcessBook, or DataLink
Archive Data Flow Is the archive data flow normal? PI SMT 3 Operation> Snapshot and Archive Statistics plug-in, ProcessBook, DataLink, or piartool –as PI SMT 3 Operation> Snapshot and Archive Statistics plug-in, ProcessBook, or DataLink
Performance Counters (Windows) All subsystems publish key performance counters to Windows' Performance Monitor (available under Administrative Tools> Performance). Windows Performance Monitor. Or setup the PI Performance Monitor Interface on the PI Server (use the ICU) and then use PI SMT 3 IT Points> Performance Monitor Points plug-in to create the tags and record the data to PI ProcessBook or DataLink

HA Daily Health Check (PI Collectives)

In addition to ensuring the health of all the individual members of the collective (Daily Health Check above), check the health of the PI Collecitve itself:

PI Collective Health

Are the secondary PI Servers available and synched with the primary PI Server?

PI Collective Manager – Is the Collective Status "Good?" All server members should be green. PI Collective Manager

Troubleshooting:
Read the "Troubleshooting Checklist" in the PI Server System Management Guide to become familiar with troubleshooting the PI Server.

Related Resources / Documentation:
  • "Daily Health Check" and "PI Performance Counters" (PI Server System Management Guide)
  • Interface Configuration Utility (ICU)
  • Interface Status Utility (ISU)
  • piartool - See "Managing Archives," in PI Server System Management Guide.
  • PI Performance Monitor Basic and  Interface is automatically installed on the PI Server in \PIPC\Interfaces\PIPerfMon_basic. Use the ICU to set up interface. Use the PI SMT 3 IT Points > Performance Monitor Points and SNMP Points plug-ins to create tags for these interfaces. The PI Performance Monitor Interface document is available in the Download Center.
  • pigetmsg - See "Viewing the Message Log," PI Server System Management Guide.
  • SMT 3 Plug-ins - Documentation for each plug-in is available in the Download Center and is also installed with SMT3 to this directory: \PIPC\SMT3\Documentation.
