The PI-SDK currently uses a network protocol termed "PINet 3 protocol" when communicating with PI Servers. PI-SDK communication with PI on Windows or UNIX systems routes messages through a local service called the PI Networking System (PINS). PINS must be allowed to communicate through the TCP/IP port 5450 and may require a firewall exception. The default port of 5450 may be reconfigured on the PI Server, and must be matched in the client connection information.
For PINet 3 protocol, the PI-SDK can be installed in one of two different configurations depending on the platform and available software. These configurations, PI3 server nodes and PINS nodes, are described in the following topics.
